Artificial grass is an alternative that brings many advantages: you can install it on any surface and keep it intact all year round, you save time and money, it is suitable for children and animals, it can be used around a swimming pool and it has fantastic drainage. Positioned on a garden or terrace, although it does not require the same maintenance as natural grass, artificial grass will still require some care to ensure a tidy and cleaning appearance that lasts over time
Especially if you live in a particularly rainy place, it is normal for this rug to deteriorate when exposed to the elements. The passage of time, dust, the accumulation of residues, and its continued use can seriously damage its appearance.
See below how to keep artificial turf clean and look like new for longer!
What Will We Need To Clean Artificial Grass
- Neutral ph detergent and lukewarm water
- A tube
- A leaf blower, flexible non-metallic garden rake, stiff broom, or vacuum cleaner
Whether it’s a quick brush-up to get rid of dried debris or a quick spray with the hose, these tasks will be enough to keep your artificial turf tidy. Regular inspection helps prevent rotting leaves, twigs, dust, dirt, and moss growth.
Brushing with a stiff broom or a non-metallic garden rake, in addition to removing debris, ensures a lively and well-kept appearance to the lawn. If all this weren’t enough, and you feel like your lawn needs washing, you can use the water hose or, if the lawn is on a terrace or balcony, a bucket of water and a mop. If there are areas with stubborn dirt, pour warm water with mild detergent onto the wet lawn and brush again. Rinse everything and let it dry.
Types Of Cleaning For Artificial Grass
Depending on whether you want to clean it more lightly or more intensively, you could choose between three different ways:
Rinse With Water
It is about wetting the artificial grass to clean it. You can do this cleaning whenever you want, whenever you feel like refreshing your garden, or in summer to beat the heat in the middle of the day. Wetting your artificial grass with a hose will get rid of any dust that can build up. Furthermore, you will remove the sediments deposited inside it: leaves, threads, mosquitoes…etc.
Thorough Cleaning
To clean artificial grass, you can brush the area removing any remaining material with a stiff bristle brush, and then spray it with water. You could add liquid soap with neutral PH to the water and let it dry.
Thorough Disinfection
Sometimes we need to disinfect our artificial grass at the same time as we clean it. To do this we use neutral PH liquid soap and an antibacterial solution. Cleaning with soap has various properties: it reduces static electricity and the effect of the sun on the filaments, eliminates bacteria, and gives a pleasant clean scent.
If you have a garden available, you can use a water pump to thoroughly wash the artificial grass. If, on the other hand, you have a terrace available, you can use a mop and brush.
How To Remove Stains From Artificial Grass
Food Stains, Wine Stains, Tea Or Coffee Stains
These first three are easy to remove, especially if you don’t let them dry. Whenever food or drink is spilled, wipe the surface immediately with a damp cloth. If food or drinks have already dried, use a soft sponge with water and a little PH-neutral liquid soap.
Stains Of Pet Urine Or Feces
The remains of your pet’s urine or feces should be cleaned from the artificial grass with disinfectant. These are elements that can generate bacteria and for this reason, it is better to properly sanitize the area, for your peace of mind and that of your loved ones.
Marker Or Ballpoint Pen Stains
The splashes that penetrate the grass more, such as marker or ink, can be eliminated by rubbing them with neutral PH liquid soap and a soft scourer. Repeat this step as needed, always carefully.
Oil Or Grease Stains
You can clean these residues on your artificial grass by wiping them with PH-neutral liquid soap and a soft cloth. Rub if necessary, but always gently, so as not to damage the filaments.
What To Do To Keep Synthetic Grass In Excellent Condition
- Brush the artificial grass every week if possible, with a hard broom or a hard bristle brush. You should always brush against the direction of the carpet fibers.
- Moisten the lawn at least once a month, especially if the climate is dry and hot and rainfall is rare. On days of extremely high temperatures, this can cool the soil. Of course, when it’s cold or rainy, don’t get wet.
- Vacuum to remove dust, leaves, or twigs. A cordless vacuum cleaner is ideal, but a garden rake or broom will do just fine.
- Use a jet of water to remove surface dirt, avoiding excessive pressure.
- Do not apply abrasive products, as a soapy solution is much better for pet excrement or food and drink remains. For a more powerful disinfection, you can use a neutral antibacterial cleaner.
What Not To Do On Cleaning Artificial Grass
- Avoid sharp objects: they could cut or tear the artificial grass garden or terrace. If you’re trying to get something out of the grass, use a putty knife or something blunt.
- Do not use harsh chemicals to remove sticky material – this may damage the plastic. Instead, use dish soap, a mix of vinegar and water, or a cleaner specifically made for artificial grass. This goes for pesticides too, just use a hose to wash any bugs off;
- If you’re tempted to use something stronger for stubborn dirt, try pouring the product into a corner or out of sight to make sure the chemicals don’t cause a reaction;
- However, If you use water to clean the lawn, do not try to dry it with heat sources. It will dry naturally.
